Walbrook JBA
Last term was very successful for Walbrook J.B.A and this was clear in the Awards Assembly. In total we picked up thirteen awards for our contributions around the school. As well as receiving a lot of awards, a member in our class won the Jack Petchy award. Jonathan Joseph will donate the £200 pounds prize to the PE department.
We also have a member of the SLT in our form, Mohammad represents Walbrook, and has been working with staff to improve the Academy. In addition, a number of students in our class took part in the borough indoor athletics, in which the Academy was very successful. We are looking forward to the inter-house athletics as last year we won and are hoping to win again this year.
The vertical tutorial system in Wren works well as we know how to work together as a group. It also gives us a chance to work with different age groups. We work well in different teams, and enjoy our current affairs quiz every Friday.

Daniel Coutinho – Athletics
Musa Dawodu – Football & Athletics
Akim Fashanu – Football
Bobbi Jo Goldsmith – Netball
Several students performed in the Christmas Concert during the last week of term and on the last day of term a few students organised a secret Santa. As a tutor group we take the Friday Quiz very seriously. This is often led by a student and four or five teams compete on a range of current affairs and general knowledge questions. Students can improve their performance by reading, listening to or watching the news.
Walbrook AGE
As the form tutor, I am very proud of the wonderful achievements that Walbrook AGE have made this term. My pride in their achievements is clearly reflected in the students and therefore I saw no better way to summarise the Autumn term than to ask the form how they felt about their accomplishments – this is what they had to say:
“We are proud to say that Walbrook Age have won several awards this term. We have won awards in various subjects such as: English, Science, Maths, Music, PE, ADT, Humanities and 100% Attendance. A majority of the class received awards. As a class we are proud of each other’s achievements and we aim to improve and progress on our success!”
To clarify, throughout the subjects, a majority of students in our form won various awards for work progression, punctuality, and perseverance amongst others. It is a pleasure to be a form tutor for such a wonderful group of students.
I would also like to formally welcome a newcomer to the form, Kaylum Duah who started this term and seems to have settled in exceptionally well. I am sure he and the rest of the form will have an equally successful term.
Holborn OOA
HOL/OOa had a very interesting tutor group discussion recently about how the government spends its money and how it can get out of its current position of being in debt to the tune of £175bn.
We plan to extend this discussion by following the build up to what should be the most interesting and closely fought general election for many years in May/June. Each member of the tutor group will choose which party they want to support and research their policies. Eventually we will debate which party should be given the chance to run the country after the election.
Holborn LHA
Holborn/LHA are extremely proud to have received so many awards last term. Students were awarded achievement certificates for English, ICT, Maths, Science, English and RE. Benito Marlay-Nicholson also received a ‘Jack Petchey’ award which allows him to spend £200 on school facilities. Other achievements included a 100% attendance record awarded to Lewis Nottage and a positive contribution award to Otto Weaver. Team members of Holborn LHA are also competing in the Barnet Dance Festival and borough athletics. We support one another through challenges and celebrate one another’s achievements, we are very proud to be part of Holborn LHA.
Holborn THO
Holborn THo have had a fantastic start to the year at Wren. We have seen many different winners within the class during our Friday morning quizzes. The students have shared many responsibilities within the form group with great enthusiasm. During our academic mentoring sessions Mrs Marr, Mr Alldis and mself have been incredibly impressed with the progress the students have made with their targets and learning.
Strand AWA
When asked about what they enjoyed about tutor time at Wren, the students replied with the following quotes:
“I enjoy the reading during tutor time.” Alex
“I enjoy sharing my feelings, with my tutor and tutor group.” Bomi
“I enjoy the quizzes and having discussions.” Kaleb
“My favourite time is when we celebrate our birthdays and our feelings about how our day has gone.” Annie-Rose
The Friday quiz was a popular activity across the whole group as was the reading and discussions. Student also enjoyed talking to each other about their days, learning and sharing tips with each other.
Strand LMO
Strand LMo have made a fantastic start to the 2009/10 academic year and it’s great to see how well the different year groups are getting along with each other.
Strand LMo’s contributions to the academy have been many, but of particular note are the following:
For the Christmas concert, we were all proud to see members of our form contributing acts in a variety of ways, be they through music (Mehdi’s solo performance on the trumpet and the many members of the gospel choir and orchestra), drama (Carine’s reading of the “politically correct” Snow White) or sports (Leon and Gabi’s stunning gymnastic displays). Of course, of all the Christmas activities conducted at this time, the form’s Secret Santa was probably the most well received by the form.
As well as this, congratulations go to Ryan for competing against several other schools and winning a highly regarded Architectural Prize- well done!
And who could forget the trip to Saint Pauls Cathedral and Strand’s Church House: St Clement Danes on the Strand? Easily one of the most interesting churches in London, the form learnt all about the history of this church; how it was bombed to an empty shell during World War II and how it was rebuilt by the Royal Air Force to its current glory. Needless to say, being the most photogenic form in the academy, Strand easily won the photography challenge by looking the best.
It has been a great start to the year for Strand LMo, and we are certainly excited about what is to come in 2010.
Strand JDO
Last term ended on a highly enjoyable, successful note; the enjoyment arose from the ‘Secret Santa’ the tutor group selected as a Christmas treat and from the fantastic achievements attained by the group when they received their awards in the Celebration Assembly. A very successful end for the group at the conclusion of the first term. It has also been a highly successful and encouraging start to the academic year in terms of the supportive, positive relationships that have been built between the different year groups and the different individuals. Year 8 have shown great maturity, empathy and understanding in their care and guidance of the new Year 7 students and Year 7 have been equally impressive in their approach to new Secondary schooling. Vertical Tutoring is proving a very successful model.
Piccadilly PMO
The most popular and hotly contested tutor session of the week is the Friday general knowledge quiz. This quiz is played in teams and gives students the opportunity to show, and occasionally reveal their lack of, knowledge of the previous week’s events. The prize of being the first table to be dismissed at the end of the day for the following week is a surprisingly strong motivator and preschool internet research on a Friday is now common practise. Ben M, Tom and Lakshmana are always the team to beat but it is pleasing to see everyone rising to the challenge and honours have been shared throughout the class in recent weeks. Thanks to Mr Barnes for taking the time to organise this.
Piccadilly FWO
Piccadilly FWO have had a great first term, with several house visits into London where they had the chance to understand more about Wren’s specialism of Design and the Built Environment and understand the relevance of our house name. Vertical tutoring has been a great success with some strong friendships being formed across the year groups.
The Rewards Assembly demonstrated our form’s strengths, with an award received by a form member in all but one subject area (Miss Wood was counting!)
Melba won the prize for the Numeracy Day and kindly shared her prize vouchers with the form – we now have a scrapbook which Piccadilly/FWO intend to fill with photos, mementos, memories, drawings and anecdotes to document our time together.
Several members of the form contributed to a very enjoyable and entertaining Christmas concert, counting the orchestra and gospel choir among our many talents.
With new targets currently being set for the year ahead, we’re all really looking forward to an exciting and eventful year!
Piccadilly JKE
The Autumn term was long but ended on a high with the thought and consideration shown by members of the tutor group in organising and contributing to our secret Santa. The gifts chosen for each other demonstrated how well the group has bonded, with Year 7 and 8 students forming good friendships. Well done to Anthony and Dhruv for taking responsibility for the secret Santa.
We also celebrated many of our tutor group winning awards at the celebration assembly which demonstrated the wide range of learning habits that we are developing as a class.
Our target for Spring term is to improve our attendance. We have a Wren academy attendance league table on our notice board and at the moment we are mid-table so our target is to break into the top 4. We also have our individual attendance figures displayed so that we can see how often each member of the class is attending school. Studies prove that higher attendance will bring greater academic achievement, so hopefully we will be winning a lot more at the next Awards assembly.
Ludgate RYU
On Monday 7December we had an awards ceremony for the Autumn term. To carry out this assembly we had the head of each subject announce the winners. To follow we had attendance awards, positive achievement and finally we had the Jack Petchy. From Ludgate RYU we had 17 awards. These being Alex Vigo and Aryan achieving Humanities, Finnley and Angelica achieving French. Melika achieving English and IT, Arsheen achieving music, Josh achieving PE and ADT, Elyse and Daisy also achieving PE, Bella achieving Science and RE, Sandy achieving excellent effort in RE and Marisa achieving English. Our 100% attendance awards went to Finnley and Marvin. Well done to RYU ludgate for bringing home so many awards for our form.
Ludgate LMI
Ludgate LMI received a variety of awards at the Rewards Assembly at the end of last term with students receiving four 100% Attendance Certificates, 5 Subject achievement Certificates (from a variety of subjects including art, science, maths and humanities). They also received 5 positive contribution awards, with Sam Markovic achieving a silver.
There was also a special mention for the students who presented a speech about Wren Aacdemy to the Barnet EBP.
In tutorial times Ludgate LMi have completed a variety of activities, the most looked forward to each week being the Quiz in which 3 teams were formed a complete for a termly prize. The winners for the Autumn Term were Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious. New groups have been formed for the spring term.

Weekly reflection
“All right: that person has behaved badly towards you but haven’t you behaved worse towards God or even towards others?”
Our weekly reflection is a reminder that we need to always stand by the golden rule of doing to others as we would like to be treated. Be kind to one another and behave nicely even when others behave badly towards you – that might change them.
Christmas holidays
I am pleased to say that most students from our house fulfilled their promise of going home to help mum and dad do some cleaning, washing up and tidying during the busy Christmas period. One student even helped in their family business. Keep it going.
Well done Ludgate Jon
Bow ELE
We have had a very exciting term. It has been really good to welcome the new year 7 students to our form. We have much to be proud of! Daniella and Nicholas were elected as Student Leadership team members for Bow. Ten students received subject achievement awards. Two students received positive contributions awards. Cagdas Yilmaz, Henry Kilshaw and George Eristavi all received awards for 100% attendance. Congratulations to those students!
Over the last term, we have been budding news reporters. Each week we have been taking it in turns to research and present a report of current affairs from the week. This has lead to some very interesting debates such as whether people should be banned from keeping dangerous dogs and whether money should be spent on protecting endangered species during times of recession. We all get our chance to have a say and are learning how to challenge other opinions and our own!
We use our time before we leave the academy celebrating success of individuals- we love to count the number of nines that have been achieved by the end of the day! We also enjoy sharing the things that we have learnt throughout the day with one another and sometime get time for a brain teaser or two!
Bow DBO
A large number of my students received effort and achievement awards in a vast amount of different subjects, including Science, Mathematics, PE, Humanities, English and RE.
Within the tutor group are students who have represented the Academy in football and netball matches against other schools, during the first term.
Numerous students are also learning to play a range of different instruments through weekly, private music lessons in the Academy.
Finally, after a closely fought contest, the Bow DBO quiz ended in a tie at the end of last term and is set to resume this week... with a new seating plan and therefore, new teams... it’s all to play for!
Bow JDE
Bow JDe have made a great start to the year, proudly achieving the second highest tutor group attendance. Our students understand the importance of being at school whenever possible and being well-prepared so that they can achieve to their highest potential. We especially like to work as teams for the weekly quiz on Friday, where teams are made up of a mixture of Year 7 & 8 boys and girls.
