Opera-Tastic

On Wednesday 27 January an opera-tastic performance took place at Wren Academy. Performed by members of The English Pocket Opera Theatre-Olivia Ray, Dominic Barrand and Steven Neugarten, the production came to show the famous opera Carmen in a different light.

Getting into character

The show is all about a heart-breaker Carmen who ends up making a drama in Spain. Don Jose is a murderer who flees from his home town to become a soldier. However he falls in love with a convict Carmen (Monifah Hwata) and sets her free. After escaping from prison (he was convicted for setting Carmen free) he and Carmen run away to the mountains. Carmen gets bored of Don Jose quickly and decides to run away with Toreador (Marvin Wray) a famous bull-fighter. Don Jose hears news of his fatally ill mother but decides to go after his love Carmen. It all ends in tragedy with the only survivor being Toreador.

Other events of the afternoon included our own opera with a special dramatic performance from Mr Smith!

Wren Academy is also scheduled for another dose of opera. On 29 April the Gospel Choir are performing at the Royal Albert Hall with many other Barnet schools in an opera show. They will sing many famous songs including Toreador which is part of Carmen, the opera performed at Wren Academy.
